Flower Gazebo, Plush Garden, is an installation that blends green public infrastructure with a cute, or kawaii, aesthetic, first presented during Dutch Design Week↗︎ 2022 in Eindhoven (NL). The work speculates on the increasing use of cuteness and artificial nature as tools marketed — and often believed — to foster well-being in consumer environments and contemporary urban design. The installation is the first materialization of year-long research into the aesthetic of cuteness applied to floral imagery. It embodies an aesthetic that could be called Plush Garden, drawing on principles used by fan-driven communities to reinterpret commercial and licensed visuals and narratives. Its playful imagery reworks elements of the video game industry, where such visuals are frequently employed to trigger strong empathetic responses from players of all ages.
